MIRIAM GERSHMAN KOVITZ 1/18/1916 - 4/20/2010 Miriam G. Kovitz, former resident of San Bernardino, CA, died peacefully in Los Angeles on April 20, 2010. Born in Cleveland, Ohio, Dr. Kovitz was educated at Chicago Normal College and MacMurray College for Women. She later received her Master's and Ph.D. degrees in English literature from The Ohio State University. After relocating to California in 1964, Dr. Kovitz taught English briefly at the University of Redlands, Cal State San Bernardino, and UC Riverside. She was married for 69 years to Benjamin Kovitz, M.D., now deceased. She was a member of Congregation Emanu-El and Congregation Etz-Hadar in Redlands. She is survived by her four children (Sonia Kovitz, Johanna Kovitz, Deborah Kovitz Barkat, and David Kovitz), four grandchildren (Benjamin Louis Kovitz, Sivan Barkat Sherman, Danielle Barkat, and Ila Bo Kovitz), and three great-grandchildren (Talia, Benjamin, and Sadie Sherman). Graveside Services will be held at the Home of Eternity Cemetery, 8th & Sierra Way, San Bernardino, on Friday, April 23, 2010, at 1:00 P.M. In lieu of flowers, donations may be made to the Survivor Mitzvah Project, 2658 Griffith Park Blvd., Ste. 299, Los Angeles, CA 90039 (http://www.survivormitzvah.org).
